Before Sustainability Was a Trend, It Was a Practice
Today, "sustainable fashion" is everywhere. Brands talk about reducing waste, recycling materials, and protecting the environment.
But for us at Al-Mujalbab, this wasn't a strategy, it was simply how we operated. For over 25 years, we have been creating what we now call our recycled hijabs - long before sustainablility became a global movement.
Where It All Began
There was a time when we were producing 50 to 100 hijabs every single week
We were:
- Supplying wholesalers
- Preparing for conferences, conventions and weekend programs
- Fulfilling website orders
- Serving local customers who came to shop in person (in my home, at at our store)
With that level of production came one unavoidable reality:
Fabric Leftovers. Small pieces. End of rolls. Unused sections. And throwing them always never felt right.
A Simple Principle: Waste Not, Want Not
Instead of discarding these materials, we began saving them, piece by piece, week after week, year after year. I had 19 boxes stacked neatly along my basement wall and I could not figure out what to do with them. And then one day, Alhamdulillah, came a simple idea. What if I sew these pieces, ends, together to create something useful again? That simple idea turned into what is now one of our most unique offerings - our recycled hijabs.
What Makes These Hijabs Different
Each recycled hijab is created by sewing together strips of leftover fabric. At a glance they are different. But in function? They are just as wearable, just as practical, and just as versatile as any other hijab but with just more seams. And because they are made from mixed pieces no two are exactly alike. (an exception two at most)
Clearing Up a Common Misunderstanding
Let's be clear:
- These are not scraps.
- These are not damaged materials.
- These are not low-quality products.
They are made from the same premium fabrics used in our regular hijabs - simply repurposed.
Why They Matter Today
In a world where fashion waste is a growing problem, these hijabs represent something important:
- Reducing textile waste
- Extending the life of quality materials
- Offering affordability without compromising function
- Creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces
And perhaps most importantly - they reflect the mindset of responsibility.
Who They're Perfect For
Our recycled hijabs have quietly become a favorite for:
- Mothers looking for affordable starter hijabs for their daughters
- Women who appreciate unique, one-of-a-kind pieces
- Customers shopping on a budget
Anyone who values sustainability in a practical way
Why They're Only $5
This price has remained the same for years.
Not because the value is low - but because the intention is different. This product was never about maximizing profit. It was about honoring a principle that has guided this business for decades.
A 25-Year Legacy of Sustainability
Today, many brands are just beginning their sustainability journey. For us, it's been part of our process for over two decades. Quietly. Consistently. Intentionally.
Final Thought
Sometimes the most meaningful innovations aren't new. They're simply practices that have stook the test of time. Our recycled hijabs are exactly that.
And please make du'a for our sister Fazeela Muhammad, she returned to Allah last year, who helped me for many years in the production of these recycled hijabs. May Allah grant her jannatul firdous Ameen.
